Learning how to communicate effectively with referees is an essential skill for hockey players, coaches, and parents alike. Whether you’re questioning a call or seeking clarification, approaching a referee with respect and composure can make all the difference.

First, always wait for an appropriate moment. Never approach a referee during active play or when they’re focused on making a call. During a stoppage or between periods is the best time to have a conversation.

Second, keep your emotions in check. Referees are human and make the best decisions they can in split-second situations. Approaching them calmly and respectfully will always yield better results than shouting or being confrontational.

Third, ask questions rather than make accusations. Instead of saying “That was a bad call,” try “Can you help me understand what you saw on that play?” This approach shows respect and opens a dialogue.

Remember, referees are part of the game and essential to fair play. Building a positive relationship with officials benefits everyone involved in the sport.
